Manx Organisation for Motorsport Medical Officers and Paramedics

Formed as MOMMO in April 1992, there was an original membership of Doctors working on the Isle of Man and they were joined in the late nineties by State Registered Paramedics, necessitating the name change to MOMMOP.

MOMMO was formed because there was, at the time, a need for Isle of Man Doctors, who acted as Medical Officers at motorsport events or who were involved in the care of injured competitors, to be registered in one organisation. They had all agreed to be approached by clubs and organisers whose regulatory bodies required a doctor and/or paramedic at their event.

MOMMO was originally Immediate Care Scheme No. 76 in BASICS (The British Association for Immediate Care).

From April 1999, when rules changed within BASICS, MOMMOP became an 'Affiliated Group' as the cost of Scheme membership had become the same as individual membership and was considered too costly to maintain.

The last official returns [1997] to BASICS showed members of MOMMO [as it was then], were involved in treating about 100 competitive motorsport casualties, all of whom had attended the A & E Department of Nobles Hospital. This figure has remained about the same each year since.

Since 1992, 35 MOMMOP newsletters have been distributed to over 750 individuals, clubs, government departments etc involved in motorsport.

No newsletter was produced in 2011 for reasons which must be obvious to most of you. .

When BASICS required every member of an affiliated group to also be a fully paid up individual member, the numbers fell like a stone overnight.

In 2009 Dr David B. Stevens MBE found he was the only remaining doctor so it was time to terminate MOMMOPs’ association with BASICS.

DBS's individual membership will also finish in 2011 as BASICS members now need to be registered with the CQC [ Care Quality Commission ] an expensive PC, H&S red tape nightmare!

MOMO (with only one "M") happens to be the Motor Sport Association's recognised radio call-sign for Medical Officers and stands for "MObile Medical Officer".
